In terms of biodiversity, Botswana is a land of contrasts. It has the world famous Okavango Delta wetlands in the north and the arid Kalahari Desert in the center and southwest. To the south, Botswana has the first formally declared trans-boundary park in Africa, the Kgalagadi Trans-frontier Park. There is also a huge prehistoric lake and an important area for migratory birds, the now dry assemblage of salt pans called the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Park.
Botswana’s wildlife is regarded as one of, if not the best in Southern Africa, both in terms of variety and numbers. Botswana is territory to the Big 5 (buffalo, rhino, elephant, leopard, and lion), the world’s largest densities of elephants, and an assortment of bird species. It is also home to one of Africa’s great wildernesses and some of its most striking beauty. A safari in Botswana is an unforgettable experience – visitors are certain to see more wildlife than people.
