The Galapagos Islands are unlike any other place on earth. A string of volcanic islands situated almost 1000 km west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, they are unique in their flora and fauna. The islands were first made famous when a young scientist by the name of Charles Darwin published “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection” in 1859; the Galapagos are “the islands that changed the world”.
For a species to get to the Galapagos, it must cross the Pacific Ocean by wind, waves, birds, or more recently, by humans. The isolation of the islands places great limitations on which species can get there and become established; the islands are a natural laboratory for evolution. Famous Galapagos residents include the giant tortoises (the islands’ namesake), blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches, sally lightfoot crabs, and even penguins.
