Trail the Wings of Mexico’s Monarch Butterflies with The Butterfly Pavilion

Mary Ann Hamilton, Vice President of Science and Conservation at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado, is accompanying the group on this trip to Mexico. Mary Ann Hamilton has been with the Butterfly Pavilion since May of 2002. She began her work there as a zookeeper of the Curatorial department and worked her way up to VP of Science and Conservation. Mary Ann grew up in south Texas and received a Bachelors of Science in Bioenvironmental Sciences and Entomology from Texas A&M University, College Station and in 2010 received her Master’s degree in Education – Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Regis University, Denver, CO. Mary Ann has a passion for invertebrates, especially insects, invertebrate research and conservation and environmental education.

Arts/Archives’ Tours with Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski of Denver Botanic Gardens

Join Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski, Manager of Botanical Art and Illustration Programs at Denver Botanic Gardens, for a unique exploration of art archives in Europe. This 12-day tour includes four nights in London with the remaining time in southern Germany. Discover the hidden jewels of Kew Gardens’ Library, Art & Archives and enjoy Dr. Shirley Sherwood’s company while exploring the current exhibits in the only gallery solely devoted to botanical art. Learn about published and unpublished art treasures in the Natural History Museum and British Library and enjoy a tour of the British Library’s Conservation Studios. Presentation of the extensive three year conservation research project of the outstanding Reeves Collection in addition to William Morris Red House and the newly re-opened De Morgan Centre are in the program. Take a one day break from collections to visit the well-known artist and teacher, Ann Swan at her studio in Wiltshire, with a stop at Lacock Abbey and neolithic monuments at Avebury.

Madagascar Discovery with Denver Botanic Gardens

Join Dr. Sarada Krishnan, Director of Horticulture at Denver Botanic Gardens, on this unforgettable journey to Madagscar. Dr. Krishnan conducted her doctoral research in Madagascar working on conservation genetics of wild coffee (Coffea spp.). Her research was conducted in the eastern rainforest and the southeastern littoral forest habitats of Madagascar. Her fascination with the biological diversity of Madagascar and interest in coffee species led her to conduct her research work in Madagascar. During her field work in Madagascar in 2008 and 2009, she developed a love for the place, its culture and people. Through this trip, she hopes to share her passion and enthusiasm for Madagascar with trip participants.
