North Pantanal Ultimate Safari

w/ Optional Amazon Extension

August 14-20, 2019

Amazon Extension – August 20-23, 2019

This Brazil safari has been custom designed to provide the ultimate Pantanal experience. Extending from the Amazon, the Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland.  Bigger than England, it stretches across two Brazilian states (Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso du Sul) and parts of neighboring countries Paraguay and Bolivia.

Teeming with diverse flora and fauna, the Pantanal is home to the greatest concentration of wildlife in South America.  It’s also a stronghold for the jaguar, America’s largest feline.  Here, you find the largest jaguars ever recorded as well as the world’s highest density of this apex predator.

This trip is scheduled during the Pantanal’s dry season, a time when flood waters retreat, resulting in an impressive gathering of birds and other animals around scattered pools of water.  In addition to searching for jaguars, we’ll spend our days looking for iconic Pantanal species like hyacinth macaw, giant river otter, Brazilian tapir, giant anteater, and more.

Our Brazilian safari begins with arrival to Cuiabá and a road transfer along the Transpantaneira Highway.  After a night at a typical fazenda, we’ll continue to Porto Jofre where we’ll embark on our three-night stay on Mutum House Boat.   Two full days and a final morning will be spent exploring the Pantanal by boat in search of jaguars with our private expert local guide.  Our Pantanal safari culminates with a stay at Araras Lodge for more incredible wildlife viewing.

For those interested in combining an Amazon experience with the Pantanal, an extension to world-famous Cristalino Lodge is available.

If you want to see the best wildlife experiences Brazil’s Pantanal has on offer, this South American safari is for you.

DAY 1 (Wed, Aug 14) – Arrival to Cuiabá/ Transpantaneira ~ Upon arrival to Cuiabá, the capital of Mata Grosso state, we’ll be met for our private transfer to Porto Jofre along the Transpantaneira Highway.  Little more than a raised dirt road and the only road in the region, the Transpantaneira winds south some 90 miles to Porto Jofre, passing through wildlife-rich flood plains and rich gallery forest along the way.  Ditches along both sides of the highway remain filled with water throughout the year, providing refuge for wildlife even in the dry season.  Late afternoon check in to our fazenda.  Enjoy a stargazing walk this evening while listening to the sounds of the Pantanal.

DAY 2 (Thurs, Aug 15) – Transpantaneira/ Porto Jofre After breakfast, we’ll enjoy a 2-3 hr horseback ride through fields, forest and floodplains.  After lunch, we’ll continue to Porto Jofre to embark on our houseboat, home for the next three nights.  The Mutum Expeditions Boat is a flat-bottomed riverboat stationed about 30 minutes south of Porto Jofre.  Operating from June to early November, the Mutum is designed for wildlife watching with river excursions taking place in smaller boats.
