Reefs to Rockies’ award-winning “Mozambique By Land and By Sea” itinerary begins with a two-night stay in Tofo, Mozambique. The highlight: a safari that gets you up close to the action under the ocean’s surface.
The waters off Tofo’s coast attract a variety of marine giants throughout the year. Humpback whales breed here in the winter (June – October) and Tofo is a year-round international hotspot for manta rays and whale sharks. This morning, it took longer to fill out paperwork and to listen to a safety briefing than it took to see our first whale shark (14 minutes).
Whale sharks hold the record for world’s largest fish and Tofo ranks as one of the easiest locations to swim with these giants. More than 85% of ocean safaris have successful sightings and we saw two in the first hour – not a bad way to start our Mozambican adventure.
