Elevation Beer Company is in Poncha Springs, Colorado, just outside Salida. It was founded thirteen years ago by four friends: Christian Koch, Carlin Walsh, Sheila Bustamante, and Xandy Bustamante. Two of them are Chaffee County natives.
The idea for the brewery began on a cool Colorado summer evening during a barbecue. The friends realized they all wanted to live in Chaffee County, one of Colorado’s best areas for outdoor recreation, and that they all shared a serious love of craft beer. Christian and Xandy already worked in the brewing industry, while Carlin and Sheila brought strong experience in marketing and management. Everything came together quickly.
If you find yourself in that part of Colorado, whether for skiing, birding, or exploring, stop by Elevation and grab a pint. We have, and we can say with confidence that it is one of the best breweries in the state.
Three Fun Facts About the Brewery
- The Name: The name was inspired by the green highway signs across Colorado that show each town’s elevation. The founders also wanted to elevate the perception of beer in the United States, believing it should be viewed on par with fine wines and Scotch.
- Partnership with Monarch Mountain: Elevation is the official brewery of nearby Monarch Mountain, which is also the official ski area of Elevation. The two have collaborated on events and promotions since the brewery opened in 2012. The beer Little Mo’ Porter is named after a ski run at Monarch and features the ski area’s logo on its cans. Monarch season pass holders receive a discount in the brewery’s tasting room.
- Commitment to Sustainability: In early 2022, Elevation switched from plastic six-pack rings to compostable, recyclable, and biodegradable E6PR carriers. The brewery now uses one of the first high-speed applicators for these holders, joining a small but growing group of breweries committed to reducing plastic waste. Their goal is less ocean pollution, reduced strain on recycling systems, and a more sustainable future.
