In 2009, Belize’s Barrier Reef Reserve System was inscribed to UNESCO’s list of sites in danger due to the destruction of mangroves and marine ecosystems, offshore oil extraction, and the development of non-sustainable building projects.
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world, second to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. This summer, the World Heritage Committee decided to remove the Belize Barrier Reef System from the List of World Heritage in Danger. Safeguarding measures by Belize, notably a moratorium on oil exploration and better protection of mangroves warranted the removal.
