Back in Bogota after 7 days of birding (Santa Marta, Otun Quimbaya and Cali regions). Final tally of birds seen comes to 317 different species (the group saw a total of 355). To put that into perspective, we saw approximately 1/3 of the total number of species recorded in the US in Canada in just over a week!
To date, 10% of Colombian territory is protected habitat for wildlife. Imagine what it would be like if even more area is protected in the years to come. We’ll be in meetings today with Colombian tour operators to see how Reefs to Rockies can help promote sustainable tourism and local conservation efforts by increasing operations here. It’s a wonderful country and the safety issues of years past seem to have gone by the wayside. Good news, indeed.
Looks like a fantastic destination with some exceptional wildlife. I think locations like this are in desperate need of conservation due to their diverse and unique wildlife.
