Earlier this week, Southwest Airlines applied to offer non-stop daily flights between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) on Mexico’s Pacific coast. If approved, this will be Southwest’s third non-stop destination to Mexico from Denver. Southwest already flies from Denver to San Jose del Cabo (SJD) in Baja Sur and to Cancun (CUN). The new route is scheduled to launch in November 2015.

Puerto Vallarta is situated along one of the world’s largest and deepest bays – Bahia de Banderas or Banderas Bay. The bay’s geographic location makes it especially suitable for breeding and calving activities of humpback whales during the winter. Known for their acrobatic behaviors like breaching and tail slapping, humpbacks can be seen in Banderas Bay from November through April. Guided whale watching excursions are offered from December 8 – March 23.

In addition to whale watching, visitors can visit Marietas Islands, a small group of islands in Banderas Bay. The islands offer great opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. If lucky, you may even spot dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and blue-footed boobies along the way.
