Costa Rica just achieved a major milestone by meeting 100% of its energy needs with renewable sources for 75 straight days, an impressive accomplishment. On March 16, 2015 the ICE (Costa Rican Electricity Institute) released a press release stating that Costa Rica’s zero-emission milestone was enabled thanks to heavy rainfalls at four hydroelectric power facilities in the first quarter of 2015. These downpours have meant that, for the months of January, February and so far March, there has been no need to burn fossil fuels to generate electricity. This is just another reason we’re such big fans of Costa Rica!
