ITINERARY
Day 1 (Sat, Jan 24):Arrival to Mexico City ~ Upon arrival in Mexico City, we’ll be met for our transfer to Hotel Condesa DF, a chic boutique hotel located among historic buildings, on a tree-lined street in Colonia Condesa. This stylish retreat blends in with the bohemian spirit of its surroundings. For the next three nights, we’ll call this artistic and walkable district home, surrounded by tree-lined avenues, beautiful parks, and a thriving culinary and cultural scene—the perfect base for our time in the city.

Day 2 (Sun, Jan 25): Mexico City~ Our first full day in Mexico City begins in Coyoacán, one of Mexico City’s most charming neighborhoods. We’ll explore La Casa Azul (The Blue House), the intimate world of Frida Kahlo. This vibrant home-turned-museum offers a glimpse into the life and work of the iconic artist, featuring personal belongings, artwork, and artifacts from her time with Diego Rivera. The house remains much as it was in the 1950s, offering a deeply personal connection to her legacy. From here, we’ll embark on a walking tour of Coyoacán. Strolling along its cobblestone streets, we’ll take in the colonial architecture, lively plazas, and the artistic spirit that has long drawn creatives and intellectuals to the area.
We’ll have some down time this afternoon to relax and refresh before ending the day in style with sunset cocktails and dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, taking in breathtaking views of the skyline as we reflect on our unforgettable journey through Mexico City’s art, history, and culture.

Day 3 (Mon, Jan 26):Teotihuacan~ Our day begins before dawn as we make our way to Teotihuacan, the ancient Mesoamerican city steeped in history and mystery. We’ll drift gently above the colossal pyramids in a hot air balloon, revealing the grandeur of this UNESCO World Heritage Site from above. With the rising sun casting a golden hue upon the ruins, this is sure to be an awe-inspiring experience. We’ll explore Teotihuacan on foot before making our way back to Mexico City. The afternoon and evening are ours to explore as we please.

Day 4 (Tues, Jan 27): Mexico City to Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and Valle de Bravo ~ After breakfast at our hotel, we set out for an unforgettable journey to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the winter sanctuary of millions of monarch butterflies. Our destination will be carefully chosen based on the most spectacular recent sightings, ensuring the best possible experience. As we ascend into the reserve, we’ll travel on horseback (most likely) and by foot, winding through towering oyamel fir forests. Then, as we reach the heart of the sanctuary, a breathtaking spectacle unfolds—millions of monarchs swirling overhead, clustering on tree limbs, and filling the air with the soft, rhythmic flutter of their wings. Sunlight filtering through the canopy ignites bursts of orange and black, creating a scene so mesmerizing, it feels like stepping into a dream.
This is not just a visit—it’s an immersion into one of nature’s most awe-inspiring phenomena, a moment that lingers long after the last butterfly takes flight.
As the day winds down, we’ll make our way to Hotel Avándaro, a serene luxury retreat tucked into the rolling hills of Valle de Bravo and our home for the next two nights. Here, we’ll unwind in comfort, surrounded by nature, as we prepare for another day of discovery.

Day 5 (Wed, Jan 28):Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and Valle de Bravo ~ No two days at the Monarch sanctuaries are ever the same, and today promises another extraordinary encounter. Guided by the latest butterfly sightings and access conditions, we’ll once again immerse ourselves in nature’s most enchanting display as millions of monarchs create a living tapestry of color and movement.
This afternoon, we’ll explore Valle de Bravo, a charming Pueblo Mágico where time seems to slow. Nestled along the shores of Lake Avándaro, this enchanting town is a tapestry of colonial architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and vibrant plazas. As we wander through its historic heart, we’ll soak in the town’s peaceful ambiance and perhaps catch glimpses of paragliders soaring above the lake—a signature sight of Valle de Bravo.
We’ll end the evening with a delightful dinner in town, savoring local flavors as we reflect on the day’s unforgettable encounters.

Day 6 (Thurs, Jan 29): Valle de Bravo to Mexico City ~ We’ll journey back to Mexico City, arriving just in time for a one-of-a-kind folk art workshop with acclaimed contemporary artists Rubén Mica and Oscar Becerra. Masters of their craft, Mica and Becerra have captivated audiences worldwide, with their vibrant creations showcased in prestigious institutions like the Museum of Popular Art in Mexico City. In 2021, their mesmerizing exhibition, “Alebrijes Iluminados,” lit up the Denver Botanic Gardens, enchanting visitors with its radiant, dreamlike figures.
This immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to learn from the artists themselves, gaining insight into the creative process behind Mexico’s rich folk art traditions.
As the day draws to a close, we’ll gather for a memorable Farewell Dinner, reminiscing about the incredible moments we’ve shared on this journey—an evening of laughter, reflection, and celebration of the vibrant culture that has surrounded us.

Level of Difficulty: Participants must be prepared to ride a horse as well as hike over sometimes steep, rocky, uneven terrain at elevations between 9000-11,000 ft when visiting the monarch butterfly sanctuaries. This trip is designated as moderately difficult due to the monarch sanctuary visit days.
