Costa Rica is where Reefs to Rockies got its start—and for good reason. Few places on Earth pack as much biodiversity into such a small space. From mist-draped cloud forests to steamy lowland jungles, this vibrant country pulses with life at every turn. Scarlet macaws screech overhead, red-eyed tree frogs cling to leaves like living jewels, and resplendent quetzals flash emerald and crimson through the highland canopy.
Join us for a photographic journey into the wild heart of Costa Rica with acclaimed nature photographer Cheryl Opperman. This 12-day expedition is a deep dive into the art of capturing rainforest and cloud forest wildlife, paired with handpicked boutique lodges that put you right where the action happens—often just outside your door.
Whether you’re framing a hummingbird mid-hover or waiting for soft morning light to touch the forest floor, you’ll have time, space, and expert support to create truly compelling images. With small group size, flexible pacing, and Cheryl’s personalized guidance, this trip is designed to meet photographers where they are and help them grow—with nature’s drama as the ultimate muse.

Level of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate ~ This photo expedition is designed for travelers in reasonably good health who are comfortable walking short to moderate distances on uneven, often muddy terrain with camera gear. Most photography locations are accessible by vehicle or involve short walks on lodge grounds or nearby trails. Some early mornings are required to take advantage of the best light and wildlife activity. Optional hikes may involve uphill sections at higher elevations (particularly in the cloud forest), but these can be adjusted to suit individual comfort levels. Weather conditions may include heat, humidity, or afternoon rain, especially in rainforest regions. Participants should be prepared for variable conditions and have a moderate level of mobility and endurance.
