If you’ve been waiting for the right year to experience the monarch migration in Mexico, 2026 is shaping up to be something truly special. The 2025 season brought a wave of hopeful news—something we don’t often get in conservation—and everything indicates a memorable overwintering season ahead.

Even though the monarchs got a late start in the U.S., numbers climbed sharply by late summer across much of their range in the United States and Canada. Community scientists reported far more sightings than expected, a promising sign for the eastern population that makes the long journey to Mexico’s high-elevation oyamel fir forests. Their arrival this fall lined up beautifully: the first butterfly near the reserve appeared on November 2, and by November 21, both El Rosario and Sierra Chincua opened with excellent early-season activity.

The best news came from a new 2025 report from the state of Michoacán—monarch numbers have doubled since last year. After many years of concern, this kind of growth is one of the strongest signs of recovery we’ve seen in over a decade. Researchers point to sustained conservation progress: expanded milkweed planting, reduced pesticide use, healthier forests in Mexico, and strong cooperation among Mexico, the U.S., and Canada.

How You Can Witness This Remarkable Season

With so many indicators pointing upward, 2026 could offer one of the most remarkable monarch seasons in years. And if you’re hoping to experience it for yourself, we have several January journeys designed to bring you into the heart of the migration while supporting ongoing conservation efforts. Her Wild Life’s Monarchs of Mexico (Jan 18–23, 2026) offers a soulful, community-centered adventure through mountain villages, forest sanctuaries, and Mexico City’s vibrant cultural heart. Mexico’s Monarch Butterflies & Magical Cities with Butterfly Pavilion (Jan 19–24, 2026) pairs the sanctuaries with Mexico’s charming highland towns while supporting Butterfly Pavilion’s new habitat-restoration project in the oyamel forests. And Magical Mexico with Denver Botanic Gardens (Jan 24–30, 2026) blends Mexico’s art, history, landscapes, and the monarch migration into one unforgettable week.

With monarchs showing such encouraging recovery, this may be the best year in a long time to stand among millions of fluttering wings and feel the forest come alive around you. If you’re ready to experience the magic—and help protect it—now is the perfect time to reserve your spot!
