Even though Costa Rica is a small country, its biodiversity is impressive. Only the size of the state of West Virginia, Costa Rica provides habitat for approximately 4% of the world’s species. More than 850 species of birds have been recorded there. That’s more than all of the birds recorded in the US and Canada combined!
For sheer “wow factor” when it comes to seeing wildlife, we recommend heading south to Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. The Osa is home to the largest remaining section of Central America’s Pacific Coastal rainforest and the area was declared ‘one of the most biologically intense places on Earth’ by National Geographic Magazine. If you tend to carry a pair of binoculars with you while exploring, keep an eye out for the Osa’s feathered residents. They abound!
Here are some photos from a recent trip to Costa Rica’s Osa Penisula and El Remanso Lodge.
